Drivers who buy cars that have 'autonomous emergency braking' (AEB) technology could take advantage of cheaper car insurance from as early as this month, according to PostOnline.co.uk.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) is set to introduce major changes to the group rating system - which is a big factor in working out motorists' insurance premiums. This follows new work by Thatcham, the motor insurance repair research centre.
As a result, from 20th October, cars that are fitted with AEB systems could see a one to five group drop in insurance rating - potentially leading to lower insurance premiums for these drivers. These changes will be updated further down the line as more car manufacturers include AEB technology as standard in their models.
Furthermore, analysis of research studies carried out in the USA and Europe indicates that, once made widely available in the UK, AEB technology could lower the number and the cost of claims for road accidents.
James Dalton, head of motor and liability at the ABI, said: "Today's announcement is a positive outcome for motorists who can expect not only safer vehicles but reduced motor insurance premiums as a result."
