Is Scotland the new romance capital of Europe?
11 February 2013
For a romantic weekend away, where would you go? Paris? Venice? Barcelona?
How about Scotland?
It may be cold up north, but that's not stopping Scottish people stepping out with their loved ones. Research for All About Money, carried out by Opinium Research, has found that people in Scotland spend more on dates than any other region of the UK. They also go on more dates than people in any region except for London.
Almost one in ten (9%) Scottish people have been on more than 30 dates in the last year, compared with only 6% across the rest of the UK.
And they expect to spend an average of £45.38 each time, compared with a UK average of £39.95.
Only London comes close to Scotland in terms of average spend, at £45.17 per date. However, prices tend to be much higher there, so Scotland are still ahead in real terms.
People in the East Midlands are at the bottom of the league table, spending a measly £35.57 per date on average.
UK date league table
Region | Average expected spend per date |
---|---|
Scotland | £45.38 |
London | £45.17 |
East of England | £42.67 |
North East | £40.99 |
Yorkshire & Humberside | £40.70 |
South East | £39.92 |
Northern Ireland | £39.38 |
South West | £38.41 |
North West | £37.79 |
West Midlands | £36.88 |
Wales | £36.28 |
East Midlands | £35.57 |
Who's going to pay?
Our research also found some interesting differences in people's expectations when it comes to paying the bill on a date.
Although 47% of men expect to pay the whole bill, only 9% of women actually expect them to do this.
Similarly, 26% of men expect to split the bill evenly, but 43% of women expect to do this.
Ian Williams, head of PR and communications at All About Money, says: "Scotland leads the way when it comes to dating - but across the UK in general we're doing pretty well. Almost half of us have been on dates in the last year - and of those, more than one in ten (11%) have been on 6-10 dates, 20% have been on 1-5 and 6% have been on more than 30.
"It's good to see that even at a time when money tends to be tight, lots of us are happy to spend money on time with our loved ones."
