Lucy Likes… surviving the snow

25 January 2013

By Joel Stanier

This week, Joel's filling in for Lucy, who is unfortunately stranded in the snow, fighting off yetis to stay warm. She'll be back soon!

If you're like me, you'll be making the most of the snowy weather this weekend! There's nothing better than wrapping up warm, making a snowman, having a snowball fight and then going back indoors for a hot cup of tea.

Of course, the snow's a lot more fun if you've got the right gear. This week I've scoured the web for great deals on things to help you through the snowy weather.

Having fun

Tired of losing all those hard-fought snowball fights? Get the upper hand with this space-age Wham-O Arctic Force snowball blaster from menkind.co.uk - yours for just £9.99. It fires small snowballs up to 60 feet, and looks like something out of Star Wars - what could be more fun?

If you live in a hilly area, why not hit the slopes on this cheap and cheerful Alpins Pan Sledge, down from £7.99 to just £3 from Amazon? Or if you take your sledging seriously, this Snow Double Racer Sledge for £89.99 from Halfords might be more your thing.

Alternatively, this Snow Scooter from Cotswold Outdoor could be your first introduction to snowboarding, without actually having to let go of the handles.

And if you're feeling particularly flush, maybe you'll buy the Polaris 800 RMK ASSAULT 155 snowmobile - currently selling for $12,299 (that's just under £8,000 in our money, plus delivery costs).

While you're out walking

We all know someone who's hit the deck while taking a pleasant stroll in the snow. Stay safe with these WinterWise slip-on ice studs, down from £9.99 to just £2.49 at Amazon. After all, you'll need that extra grip in the middle of a snowball fight!

If you're the kind of person who doesn't like to be parted from their phone even in sub-zero temperatures, these touchscreen gloves, which use a special conductive yarn to interact with your smartphone screen, mean you can still keep warm while you're texting or browsing the web.

Do you have a cold face? Then you'll be delighted with the Beard Beanie, which combines the tried-and-tested beanie hat with a knitted beard attachment. It also makes a great disguise, especially if you're female. The Beard Beanie comes in a range of colours and can be yours for £29.99 (including delivery).

And if you're tired of carrying a hat, scarf and gloves around with you during the winter, kill three birds with one stone by wearing this fantastic Plush Animal Face Hat/Scarf/Gloves combo. It's got a hat that looks like a bull, arms that wrap round your neck like a scarf and mittens on the end - great for big kids (or little adults)!

While driving

The roads can be dangerous in snowy weather, so it could pay to be prepared. This AA Car Essentials Winter Care Kit takes care of most of the essentials - packing a foldable snow shovel, a torch, high-visibility jacket and foil blanket into one box, down from £24.99 to just £21.98 from the AA shop.
