Most useful websites for moving house

By Joel Stanier

Finding a new home can be stressful, especially if you're not familiar with the area you're moving to. You'll probably have lots of questions - how safe is the area? What are the schools like? What's a fair price to offer on a house?

We've put together this list of useful websites to help make moving home a little easier.

All About Money mortgage calculator

Obviously blowing our own trumpet here but you need to know how much you can afford, based on how much you want to borrow, the interest rate and the repayment period.

Rightmove.co.uk

Rightmove is one of the most comprehensive property search websites around, with detailed listings for properties for sale and for rent around the UK. Most listings contain a number of photos of each property, along with room-by-room descriptions.

Rightmove also offers a very useful app for Android and iPhone/iPad, so you can check out the latest listings on the move.

www.zoopla.co.uk

Enter a postcode or location and Zoopla will present you with estimated house values for that area, including any recent sales. This can be very useful when trying to figure out whether you're being offered a good price. It can also help you find out whether properties in the area you're looking at are increasing or falling in value.

Freecycle

Furnishing a new house can be expensive, so it's worth seeing what freebies you can pick up - and you may be surprised. Look around and you'll find sofas, coffee tables, beds, wardrobes, kitchen appliances and much more. All it'll cost you is the journey to collect it.

There's a good chance you'll have your own clutter you want to offload, too, and Freecycle is the ideal place to advertise it.

Gumtree

Not quite as cheap as Freecycle, but there are some good offers to be had nonetheless. Gumtree is host to literally thousands of second-hand deals on everything from TVs to garden equipment.

Some people even sell their house on Gumtree - so it may be worth a quick look to see if you can find yourself a bargain.

The Environment Agency

Does the price of the house you've got your eye on look too good to be true? It's worth checking out the Environment Agency's flood maps, which reveal whether the property may be at risk of flooding. A flood risk can make a home very expensive to insure, so it's well worth considering.

The Police

Police.uk offers crime statistics for your area, showing you how many crimes have been committed recently and even breaking it down into different types of crime. If you're particularly concerned about the safety of an area, this website could help to put your mind at rest.

Schoolsnet

Find details of schools in the area you're thinking of moving to, including the number of pupils, exam results, absence figures and more.

www.gov.uk

Find out what council tax band your new home is in.
