What is my credit rating?

Before they say 'yes' or 'no' to any application for credit, lenders will want to know much risk they would be taking if they lent you money. They will ask for your consent to search your credit report (also called credit rating / credit file), which tells them how you've handled your finances in the past. This helps them decide whether or not to give you credit - and how much to charge you if they do.

If your credit rating isn't as good as it could be, there might be ways to improve it, whether that means correcting any mistakes in your report or making changes to the way you manage your finances.

Get your credit report

Credit Reference Agencies (the companies that maintain people's credit reports) can show you the information they hold about you and provide to potential creditors. This can help you find out why you've been refused credit and make sure everything in your report is accurate. They normally charge for this: you can request the information by post, normally for £2, or subscribe online.

Experian are offering a 30-day free trial, for which you'll need a debit or credit card - and please remember that unless you ask Experian to cancel your membership at the end of the trial there will be a monthly fee.

Credit Reference Agencies

Credit Reference Agencies are professional bodies which compile information about individuals which is relevant to them obtaining credit.

When you apply for finance, the lender you approach will check your report, which contains information such as your current and previous addresses, mortgage information, bank account details and credit applications and account history, both past and present.

These Agencies can also provide you with detailed, up-to-date information about yourself. The following are some of the Credit Reference Agencies operating in the UK.
